Roughly 74,000 years ago, the Toba supervolcano produced one of the largest eruptions in the Quaternary period. The crater it left behind slowly filled with rainwater, forming a lake so large it can be seen from orbit — and at its center, a resurgent dome rose back out of the water to become Samosir Island, now home to the Batak Toba people's oldest villages.
